I just spent some time in San Diego on my way back from Seattle and found that MexCar allows for a rental to be picked up at the San Diego airport and dropped off at CBX with no extra charge at all. All of the other car agencies I contacted either didn't allow a drop off at CBX or charged quite a bit extra for the drop off at a different location. MexCar charged $25/day for an economy (it was a Nissan Versa 4 door). I have my own US insurance, so I didn't need to purchase that- just show proof. They also allow for a rental at CBX and drop off at the San Diego airport - so either way works.

Customer service was also great. The car rentals for Lindberg Field (San Diego airport) are ALL offsite so you have to take a shuttle no matter what.
I just called MexCar when I was ready and in about 5 minutes the shuttle arrived.

One thing to be aware of is that MexCar at the San Diego airport closes at
8:00 pm - so you need to arrive in advance or you can't get a car - but the prices and service were so good, I think I will just always get a flight that gets me there in plenty of time.

We just got back from PVR last night. This was the first time we used the CBX border crossing. Everything went smooth and fast. No lines for us.

Round trip crossing was $24/pp. Parking is now $17/day. Plus they round up one day if you are one minute into the next. Very crowded and difficult to find a spot. People were parking anywhere they could even it was not an official space.

Although it was interesting to try it, I will go back to just crossing on foot and taking taxi. It's basically half the cost of CBX for two people including the RT taxi to airport.

estimated cost $15.00 interesting that you can take the bridge 24 hours before the flight too.

http://laprensa-sandiego.org/featured/cross-border-terminal-nears-completion/

CBX, as the Cross Border Xpress is known in the airport world, is scheduled to open to the public on December 8th.  The new terminal is located directly across the border fence from Tijuana’s Rodriguez Airport and connects with the Mexican airport via an enclosed pedestrian skybridge.  Travelers will be able to park on the US side and have direct access to flights departing Tijuana.
The terminal will serve an estimated 2 million annual Tijuana airport travelers that currently cross the border at the land ports of San Ysidro and Otay Mesa. The Tijuana airport serves more destinations in Mexico than other Southern California airports, and also offers direct flights to Shanghai not offered from San Diego.
“This will open up domestic travel throughout Mexico and many other destinations served from Tijuana while providing the security of parking in the US,” commented Eduardo R. Contreras, a Mexican national visiting San Diego.
CBX will offer short- and long-term parking lots, retail shops, duty-free stores, and complete Customs processing and screening. CBX users will be charged a toll of $15 per crossing, in addition to parking fees.

http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/2015/aug/08/toll-crossing-otay-mesa-tijuana-airport-border/

Designed by the late Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, famous for his use of colors, the facility will house U.S. customs and immigration inspection facilities, as well as a sit-down restaurant, a sports bar, a VIP lounge, a coffee shop and a duty-free shop. There will be close to 900 parking spaces available to the public, as well as spaces for local and intercity buses, as well as taxis and Uber vehicles, Valle said.

Yes it is very simple to get a visa at TJ airport, as you enter to get to departures you go to the right.    It just moved about 50 meters as it use to be in the middle of the walkway.  It is now at the end of that walkway on the left just before the entry to all the departing airlines section.    Impossible to miss now.

Also depending on where and how you cross, at the walkway at San Ysidro you now have to either show you have a visa, which you just walk on the side for Mexicans on the left, or you must get a visa now in a different line that can be backed up depending on the day, this just opened a few weeks ago and I went through it.  The day I went through it there was no line in any of the paths.  The two visa lines are for stays less than a week and stays over a week.     As I mentioned i had a valid FMM tourist visa so went in the Mexicans line which is fine.   I was flagged for inspection, they ran my two 50 lb suitcases through the scanner and did not do a hand search even though they were not busy.

I prefer the airport one because they have so little traffic (ie so bored) that they want to fill out the form for you to actually do something.    At the airport 10 feet away you pay.

For getting there, from San diego airport, you can take a taxi but would be pricy.    You could try Uber to get you to the border.  There is a bus from San  diego airport to Santa Fe Station cheap..    At Santa Fe Station you can take the $2.50 trolley to San Yisdro, it runs about every 15 minutes and takes slightly over an hour to get to the border.  It is a short 100 yard walk to get to the proper one trolley.      At the border walk over and as I said you will have to get the visa there, and as you exit keep walking about 200 yards and there are taxis for $15.00 will take you to the airport.

Volaris also has a bus at Santa Fe Station that will go all the way to the airport, about $20-25.00, it passes through San Ysidro and you have to depart at the Mexico side and get your visa right in that building as you enter, and walk through the inspection part.

With a pet you must have all your documents and updated recently at the border crossings..

I can make a picture/map of the locations of the various things at Sante Fe Station for you using google earth pictures, if you email me directly.

If traveling in December there will be a new walkway put in place to the airport in TJ.   Was to be opened in November but heard on this last trip a few weeks ago Dec now.    This would be the ideal but obviously have not taken this.  But my bet is the Volaris bus at the Santa Fe depot will take you there directly for about $10.00.   The walkway is a private funded structure and will charge a toll fee that has not been announced.

Don't know if you have Uber but it is much cheaper than a taxi (and very reliable). Fare from the border to SAN is $30 max (depending on traffic). We never take cabs anymore if Uber is available; generally less than 50% of a taxi fare.

Car parking
Why cross in Otay? How much baggage are you carrying across? How long will you need parking? Plenty of places to park in San Ysidro - take a taxi from TJ to the airport - $8.00 white taxis - 10 min. ride. There are "airport" parking lots near SD Lindberg field to park (Hawthorn St. Pacific Hwy.), then take the trolley to TJ.

When you clear US Customs, get on the trolly to the Santa Fe station, then board the 992 bus to the airport. Don't know if a few hours will allow you enough time to make the connection from TJ, through Customs and the trip to SAN

Tijuana airport lounge, transportation to from USA TIJ Empty Tijuana Airport Driving Directions

Post by dean Wed Feb 11, 2015 10:06 am

http://otaymesabordercrossing.com/tijuana-airport-driving-directions/

Tijuana Airport Driving Directions
Otay Mesa border crossing is the best way to get to Tijuana International Airport. It is not the best way to get to Rosarito and Ensenada but it is your best border crossing choice for driving to Tijuana airport, Tecate and Mexicali.

The border crossing at Otay Mesa is just 2.5 mile east of Tijuana Airport. But most important, driving to the airport from Otay Mesa is easy and fast. Go over the map or watch our video Driving to Tijuana Airport Through Otay Mesa.

(1) The CA-905 East will take you through the Otay Mesa border. At the border crossing entrance, drive through slowly.

(2) You have to wait for the traffic signal to go through. At either side of the border you might be asked to pulled aside for a random luggage and id inspection. After you clear customs check point start driving, stay on your far left and at about 800 feet you would need to make a right turn at the stop sign, Bellas Artes Blvd.

Make sure you make a full stop. There is usually a police officer waiting for someone who forgets to make a complete stop. See map 1 of 4.

(3) Now drive for about 1/2 mile on Bellas Artes Blvd and make a right turn at the 2nd traffic light. Actually, you can only go left or right because this is where bellas Artes Blvd ends. So you have to turn right, see map 2 of 4.

(4) Now drive for about 2.5 miles on this road known to me as Carretera Aeropuerto, others refer to it as Carretera Internacional but the map describes it as Via de la Juventud Oriente. If you have to ask anyone for directions just ask for carretera al aeropuerto, this is how it is most commonly known on the streets.

To get to the Tijuana Airport terminal or to the Tijuana airport parking garage you would need to drive for about 2.0 miles and make a u-turn at the 3rd traffic light. This 3rd traffic light is hard to see and very easy to miss so make sure you always drive on the right side of the road. The first traffic light is next to a group of car rental building, the 2nd traffic light is right in front of the airport terminal and the 3rd traffic light is by the airport traffic tower.

There is one lane and it is on the far left of the road. If you miss the traffic light, don’t panic, just keep driving for about 3/4 of a mile and make a u-turn at the turn-around (traffic circle). See map for 3rd traffic light, map 3 of 4 and map for traffic circle. map 4 of 4.

OTAY MESA — A cross-border pedestrian bridge linking San Diego with Tijuana’s A.L. Rodríguez International airport is set to open next summer, the project’s U.S. developer announced Monday.

The privately funded and operated $120-million project would create a port of entry limited to toll-paying airline passengers that is unique on the U.S. border. It consists of an enclosed 390-foot-long bridge with divided north/south corridors that will allow passengers to walk across between the United States and Mexico, avoiding lengthy lines at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry.

A news release from the developer, Otay Tijuana Venture, LLC, said the project will be named “Cross Border Xpress.” The statement did not discuss the price of the toll, but previous estimates have ranged from $13 to $17 per passenger.

http://www.mondaq.com/unitedstates/x/330748/Building+Construction/Groundbreaking+Crossborder+Airport+Terminal+Linking+Tijuana+to+San+Diego+Breaks+Ground

Sheppard Mullin client, Otay Tijuana Venture, announced this week that a cross-border pedestrian bridge linking San Diego with Tijuana's A.L. Rodríguez International airport will be set to open next year. The project, which began in 2008 when Otay Tijuana Venture purchased the land in Otay Mesa, involved Presidential permits in both countries as well as unique Public Private Partnerships with U.S. and Mexican customs and immigration authorities.  It is the first project to connect a U.S. facility with a foreign air terminal.

The privately funded and operated project will create a port of entry limited to toll-paying airline passengers that is unique on the U.S. border. It consists of an enclosed 390-foot-long bridge with divided north/south corridors that will allow passengers to walk across between the United States and Mexico, avoiding lengthy lines at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry. The bridge will connect the airport to a 65,000-square-foot structure on Otay Mesa that will include retail shops and restaurants, airline customer service counters , and short and long-term parking facilities. It will also include an area where U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers would process passengers.

The construction of the Terminal and connecting bridge is funded in part by a loan from Bancomext (Mexico's development bank) and Banco Invex. This is the first time that  Mexico's development bank has made a loan to a U.S. based developer for a project based in the U.S. and collateralized primarily by assets located in the U.S.

Sheppard Mullin advised Otay Tijuana Venture in all aspects of the development including land use matters, corporate structuring and  cross border tax planning , as well as negotiation of the financing agreements, leases and  construction contracts.

Tijuana airport lounge, transportation to from USA TIJ Empty walkway to TJ airport breaks ground

Post by dean Wed Jun 04, 2014 12:27 pm

One of a Kind Project in the
World, Breaking Ground in Otay Mesa:
Cross-Border Facility
Construction has started on the awaited cross-border facility, a pedestrian bridge that will serve as a port of entry for ticketed passengers to the Tijuana Airport. Construction is expected to last between 14 to 15 months.

Tijuana airport lounge, transportation to from USA TIJ Captur11

http://sdbj.com/news/2014/jun/03/work-begins-otay-mesa-cross-border-air-terminal/?utm_source=Newsletter+June+4+2014&utm_campaign=Newsletter+September+4th%2C+2013&utm_medium=email

Ground has been broken on the Otay Mesa side on a $78 million cross-border terminal that will give local ticketed airline passengers access to the Tijuana airport on the Mexican side of the international border.
The 95,000-square foot-terminal is being built by a joint venture entity called Otay-Tijuana Venture LLC, which includes Chicago-based Equity Group Investments and two Mexican investment groups, Palareo Inc. and PAP Corp.
Equity Group, a private investment firm owned by billionaire Sam Zell, has been planning the terminal since 2007.
Set for completion in 2015, the terminal will allow ticketed air travelers from the U.S. side to cross a 525-foot bridge and board planes departing from Tijuana’s Rodriguez International Airport. The facility will also allow passengers arriving on the Tijuana side to cross into the U.S. via the same facility, after passing customs inspections.
Users of the crossing terminal will pay a toll — still to be finalized — to access the facility.
Construction has been underway on the Mexican side of the border since September, according to developers. Representatives of the joint venture have said U.S. construction will take about 15 months to complete.

OTHER..

San Ysidro, also note the trolley is a viable way to get to the border and take a taxi to the airport.   trolley runs about every 15 minutes.    you can also take a bus at the border, San Ysidro there is a greyhound bus station (about $6.00) about 50 feet from the US customs exit and where the trolley drops you.

Otay Mesa, the best is if you are being dropped off go to Otay Mesa, a Taxi from Otay Mesa is $10.00 and 5 minute ride.

Construction begins on cross-border bridge connecting Tijuana Airport with the US

Imagine being able to walk across the U.S.-Mexico border in just a few minutes.

That's the idea behind a plan moving forward at the Tijuana International Airport. Developers there are building a bridge that will span all the way from the terminal to the border crossing at Otay Mesa. Construction on the project began last week.

But, if everything goes as planned, the bridge could be completed as soon as 2014.

when crossing back into the US if you take a taxi make sure you have a passport card...   see the line difference, with passport card you can use the ready lane.   difference 15 minutes vs 2 hours at times.

Tijuana airport lounge, transportation to from USA TIJ Empty get the RFID to expidite passing at the border

Post by dean Fri Jul 26, 2013 9:17 am

You can apply at the US consulate in San Jose. Go online and print out the forms and get the photo taken, make sure you print out the size information if doing it here for the place taking the photo. This takes about 1-2 months.

If you are going to the USA now go to a US post office that handles the applications and pick up the forms and send it from the post office. Have picture taken down here to save time still.

If walking across  at Otay or San Ysidro, have the taxi drop you off at the front of the line right at the building entry, there is a special door,/turnstyle for people with these cards.   You basically are cutting in front of the entire line.

One other way to expedite crossing while you do not have the pass is take a bus not a taxi from the airport.     The problem is the bus to otay only runs every hour or more.    So you could take the bus to San Ysidro for the same price, those buses leave every 15 minutes.       Why you want to take these buses is they have a special bus lane at the immigration customs for the USA the bus drives up to the building and there is a special lane for only the bus passengers.

BTW with Volaris you can buy a bus ticket from them airline and it will take you rom airport to a stop in downtown San diego where there are other mass transit options.   And the same to get to the airport.     If you do this as the bus gets to customs same thing you go through the expedited lane, into the building and as you leave US customs exit the building quickly and the bus (generally a different bus) is waiting about 200 yards to the left in the turn around circle.   It will be the only bus in view.  The first time it is a bit intimidating, but know it is as simple as I wrote.

Tijuana airport lounge, transportation to from USA TIJ Empty Re: Tijuana airport lounge, transportation to from USA TIJ

Post by dean Sun Mar 25, 2012 9:12 am

just flew up to TJ. the bus run by Volaris at the airport worked great. As soon as you get to the baggage area go the greyhound/currrio?sp) window for the bus. buy your ticket show your ticket for the discount, and then get your baggage, you do not have much time, get your luggage to to the right after existing and walk about 100 yards do not delay they leave almost right away. It was a van and they take you to the bus drive up special crossing "expidited" border crossing. As you cross exist the immigration door where all do and right away go to the left, there will be a bus there. The bus was about the nastiest bus I have ever been on but for $16.00 to get me with two stops to Oceanside CA who cares. The bus stopped for 5 minutes in San Diego at the greyhound station. So make sure you use the rest room at the airport before you start the bus trip, and do this before you get your luggage... This bus also goes to LA and all the way to Sacramento. If you wanted to get to amtrack or sprinter or the airport you can get a local bus at greyhound area or walk a block or two.

this is volaris bus connection   either to TJ or back to USA.    there are some buses that also continue on to SD main greyhousnd bus terminal that you can link to train or sd airport, or to oceanside, LA, sacramento and more.

volaris picks up at the san diego santa fe depot station where many different mass transit meet.

there was a comment that at the TJ airport they had to wait 2 hours. So in that respect you may be better off for the tj to usa not using volarias bus, there are many buses leaving the airport to the border every 15 minutes. So just when you arrive go to the bus area and take the next one is time saving. It gets you to the border and from San Ysidro you can get on the trolley to downtown every 15 minutes or so. which connects you to all kinds of mass transit.

Tijuana airport lounge, transportation to from USA TIJ Empty shuttle to tijuana airport

shuttle to tijuana airport

Are you looking for transportation from San Diego to Tijuana Airport ? Where to find Tijuana airport shuttle from San Diego? How about San Diego to Tijuana airport on trolley or bus transportation to Tijuana airport?

In this webpage we will "hope" to clear all your doubts about whether to arrivet to the airport of Tijuana by bus, taxi, trolley or van shuttle from San Diego, California.

If you are you looking for transportation from San Diego to Tijuana Airport for a family of 2 or more you ..."MUST"... know that there are many reliable but OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE shuttle service companies from mostly everywhere in San Diego that will take to the Tijuana International airport safe and "hopefully" on time. We, in fact, provide you with a cheaper shuttle service from our parking lot in Otay Mesa to the Tijuana airport. It is less expensive, easier and faster.

You do have other cheaper transportation options to get to the Tijuana airport such as riding the trolley from San Diego to the border and then getting a taxi to the airport of Tijuana. Take the Trolley from either Old town or Downtown or from anywhere where the Trolley red line makes a stop and go to the last Trolley stop at the San Ysidro border. It will cost you $2.50 per person, one-way. You then walk across the San Ysidro border and take a taxi for about $25 to the Tijuana airport. This is the web site link to the San Diego Trolley: San Diego Trolley Fares and Routes. So for a family of four in this example, it would cost you approximately $35 one way and it would take you approximately 1 hour to get to the Tijuana airport. You would need someone to drop you off and pick you up at the trolley station.

A different option is to take the greyhound bus from downtown San Diego to the airport in Tijuana. It would cost you about $15.00usd one way and it would take you about 1 to 1.5hours. Again, you would need someone to take you to the bus station or you would need to find a cheap car parking lot in downtown where you car park your car long term. For details go to Greyhound website at http://www.greyhound.com//. Make sure you arrive to the bus station on time and make sure you buy your ticket to the airport of Tijuana and not to the Central Bus station of Tijuana.

The best option is City Captain Sedan Service. They have Town Cars, SUV, Van with many options. Its usually $120 each way. Visit their website http://www.citycaptain.com for more info. They also are good option to San Diego Airport, LAX. They have better rates than Super shuttle or San Diego taxis. Check their Yelp.com review voted 1 for giving great service and rate.

Just returned from flying out of TJ and back. Initially had planned to park my car in the Oceanside transit center and take Crucero/Greyhound on their service to the TJ airport (I live in North County and they have free long term parking there). After I parked and bought the tickets, the clerk announced that their buses were running "2.5hours behind schedule". I immediately cancelled my tickets...and drove over to San Ysidro. Parked at the border for a $6/day prepaid rate, crossed the border on foot and caught a taxi there.

Taxi ride to the TJ airport cost me US$10. On the way back, the taxi ride cost me MXPeso100 + US$2. So about ten dollars each way. Everything was efficient and this was just last week.

We're using an airline shuttle (Volaris) from the Amtrak station (downtown SD) for $20.00... Great deal.. Clean vehicles... Shuttle leave the train at 9:00 sharp...

Sep 02, 2008, 2:19 AM

Just took the Volaris shuttle from Tijuana airport to the Amtrak station downtown this evening. Also took the Volaris shuttle to Tijuana airport on Friday night.

What's good: Volaris seems pretty competent. Flights on time. Shuttle left nearly on time on both occasions.

What's bad: 3.5 hour trip (longer than flight from Guadalajara to Tijuana) from Tijuana airport to Amtrak station due to lack of U.S. Border agents processing coach/bus passengers.

What's sad: At least on this trip, Mexico better organized than USA.
i have found the bus via volaras into USA to be much faster than reported above.   it was an expidited line.   then took the trolley to SD.

also note a new walkway bridge has been funded and in the process of being made to walk from the airport to the USA side, this will resolve so many of the problems and help traffic in TJ.   I hope they expant the trolley to this location.
