Yesterday morning i was ready to pitch my laptop, today it's working perfectly.  So if your computer is acting up you might want to think about getting it looked at, cleaned, reformatted, debugged, etc.  I highly recommend Cesar Jimenez...learned about him from LPG a few years ago.  He's clever, professional and very reasonably priced.  Also, he will come to your home.  Excellent English if it matters. cell 612 108-9826

computer geek - Page 2 Empty R-Studio recovers data when others won't

Post by dean Fri Apr 19, 2013 6:47 pm

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2034662/review-r-studio-recovers-data-when-others-wont.html#tk.nl_today

erase a file by accident that is critical??? do not save anything or turn on and buy this program if that important.

R-Studio recovers data when others won't

There are a lot of file recovery programs out there that can try to recover your files from a damaged drive. There are even free ones, but when your vital data is on the line, R-Studio Data Recovery is quite possibly your best bet. Not only does R-Studio Data Recovery work with FAT and NTFS partitions, it understands all the Linux, Unix (BSD), and Mac OS file systems, and even the new ReFS (Resilient File System) used in Windows Server 2012. It also copies and creates images of drives, and will recover data from said images—a crucial ability when a drive is deteriorating.

computer geek - Page 2 Empty how to quarantine a file properly

Post by dean Wed Feb 27, 2013 11:50 am

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/virus-spyware/f/3522/p/17598903/17721889.aspx#17721889

you said you've tried to "quarantine" it... does that mean your anti-virus program picked-up on it as being a virus??? [if not, i'm nor sure what you meant by "quarantine"].

if it was installed as an independent program [or "piggy-back" to another/known program], you can check the add/remove programs, in your Control panel. i didn't read all the details on the three links i gave you.... did they offer any suggestions?

if all else fails, you can seek assistance in the HiJackThis forum, by posting an HJT log there:

Download the latest version of HJT(hijackthis) (version 1.99.1) from
http://majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

you must create a separate folder and place it there.... people commonly use C:\HJT. Note: Please do *NOT* use a TEMP (temporary) folder, *NOR* your DESKTOP, as HJT will be generating log files and backup files in the folder from which it is run... you risk accidentally losing these if you use a TEMP folder, and you will generate extreme clutter if you use your DESKTOP.

The file above comes as a compressed .ZIP file... you have to UNzip it (hopefully, you have an UNzip utility built into your Windows Explorer. If for any reason, you're unable to UNzip it, you can download the already-unzipped .EXE file from http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HijackThis.exe )

After Unzipping, double click on HiJackThis.EXE

Click on Do a System Scan and Save a LogFile

This will automatically open NotePad

Copy the entire file from NotePad: EDIT/SelectAll, EDIT/Copy

Then go to the new forum dedicated for HiJack This logs (**NOT** back here), and PASTE the results there:

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board?board.id=si_hijack

Be sure to include a detailed description of any problems/errors/warnings you are encountering.

Hopefully, one of the HJT experts will get to it as quickly as possible.

WARNING: HiJack This is a VERY POWERFUL tool. Do *NOT* do anything else (in particular, do NOT use it to delete any entries) until you are advised to do so!! Improper use of this tool can severely damage your system.

Supplemental note: The procedure as worded above has been carefully edited over time, so as to expedite the process of helping people. Nevertheless, it seems that many individuals try to be "creative", and make some variations. It really would be to your benefit if you follow these directions EXACTLY as stated... because certain changes on your part can result in slowing-down the help process.
Specifically, the following are 3 very common BAD deviations which will cause delays:
a) BAD: using an older/outdated version of HiJackThis...
The experts only work with the current version. So if you make a post with an older version, you'll simply be advised to get the latest version, re-run it, and re-post your log.
b) BAD: using a TEMP directory or your DESKTOP for HJT....
Some experts may insist you move HJT before they'll begin working with you. Others will start the repair process, advising you to move HJT as one of the very first steps. Failure to do so can result in losing potentially critical information. So please, just use the suggested C:\HJT directory, rather than try to be creative.
c) BAD: posting your log in the wrong forum...
if you post your log back here, in the Virus/SpyWare forum, it will "sit idly", either until the forum moderator gets around to move it for you... or until you decide to repost your log... in the HiJackThis forum.

POST SCRIPT: It has come to my attention that many people are unfamiliar with how to create the recommended sub-directory/folder C:\HJT ;

while others are able to create this directory, but are unsure how to move HJT into it (from wherever it happened to get downloaded into, "by default")...
If you have either of these "problems", then you should download a self-extracting copy of HijackThis from
http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis_sfx.exe
Save it to your Desktop.
Double-click on the file hijackthis_sfx.exe file, and it will self-extract into its own folder,
C:\Program Files\HijackThis

Post by dean Tue Oct 09, 2012 5:39 am

Skype has a potential threat, http://countermeasures.trendmicro.eu/skype-worm-spreading-fast/ this worm can hold your computer randsome. Obviously if you receive a strange message from a friend do not click on it. Here is the one ““lol is this your new profile pic? h__p://goo.gl/{BLOCKED}5q1sx?img=username” or “moin, kaum zu glauben was für schöne fotos von dir auf deinem profil h__p://goo.gl/{BLOCKED}5q1sx?img=username” I think everyone by now has some sort of virus blocker here is a link to microsofts free one http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/products/security-essentials

computer geek - Page 2 Empty online file storage.... free

Post by dean Thu Apr 26, 2012 7:41 am

These are great free services, and recent entries to the market of microsoft and google should tell you something. I have been using box.net for years and find it so valuable. But I have to say their free service is nothing compared to the benefits to Microsoft's free skydrive or googles free new as of Tuesday google drive.

These are great for a small business. Great for a traveler and just ideal for everyone. You have access to most if not all your information anywhere in the world. And it is the ideal backup because it will always keep you most recent changes online. So if you have a computer/hard drive crash all your important information is still recoverable.

This is password protected but remember you should always have a strong password. People that do not use special characters in their password should not be doing this. just add a $,!,%,^, use the same one before and after your password and it will be infinitely more secure.

The way these work is when you download the program (did I say it is free) for 5 and 7 gig again only your data is stored. Not your programs so you will not need this much unless you are a camera junkie who shoots in high resolution. Microsoft offers about the best deal for $10 a year 20GB a lot more space. So you download their program and it will install a folder on your computer. Then you move into that folder the documents you want online and it will always sync them. VERY IMPORTANT you can choose public or private. In general you will always put things in private. If you want to share them to the world put them in public.

Also with Microsoft they have a feature that allowed you to make or edit word, excel and so on documents.

I had been using box.net for years but will not because these other features put box to shame. these newer services are truly the so called cloud in action. I keep copies of nearly everything I am working on there including copies of passports credit card company phone numbers in case of loss of card, bank phone numbers, copies of travel reservations/tickets and so on. If you remember your password you can retrieve anyplace in the world. But do remember if you ever use a unsecured computer in a cafe I STRONGLY urge you to change your password when you get to a secure computer later.

and yes these will be accessible by smartphones. phone operating system dependent.

there is one other system worth noting sugarSync, it syncs any folder on the PC so you do not need to make a new directory.

Type in another language

You're studying a foreign language and you need to type a paper, or you want to send an email to a foreign pen pal. You could commit dozens of keyboard shortcuts for foreign accents to memory, or you could just use AX.

This program allows you to type language accents with just one key. Open the program, select the unaccented character in Word, hit F8 and voilà! For letters with multiple accent marks - such as the Spanish U - you can cycle through the options by pressing F8 until you find the accent you want.

computer geek - Page 2 Empty identity theft at IRS

Post by dean Wed Feb 01, 2012 1:33 pm

http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/249072/irs_helps_bust_105_people_in_massive_identity_theft_crackdown.html#tk.nl_dnx_t_crawl
The IRS is instrumental in fighting identity theft. A 2011 report by the Government Accountability Office stated that in 2010, the IRS identified more than 245,000 identity theft incidents that affected the tax system. The hundreds of thousands of taxpayers with tax problems caused by identity theft represent a small percentage of the expected 140 million individual returns filed, but for those affected, the problems can be quite serious.

"The IRS provides taxpayers with targeted information to increase their awareness of identity theft, tips and suggestions for safeguarding taxpayers' personal information, and information to help them better understand tax administration issues related to identity theft," the GAO states.

Included in the GAO report was IRS' top 10 list of identity theft information everyone should be aware of. The list:

1. The IRS does not initiate contact with a taxpayer by email.

2. If you receive a scam email claiming to be from the IRS, forward it to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov.

3. Identity thieves get your personal information by many different means, including:

● stealing your wallet or purse;

● posing as someone who needs information about you through a phone call or email;

● looking through your trash for personal information;

● accessing information you provide to an unsecured Internet site.

4. If you discover a website that claims to be the IRS but does not begin with "www.irs.gov," forward that link to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov.

5. To learn how to identify a secure website, visit the Federal Trade Commission at www.onguardonline.gov/tools/recognize-secure-site-using-ssl.aspx.

Post by dean Wed Oct 19, 2011 10:56 am

I would only buy LED LCD monitors now, they save a decent amount of power. we do not need the laPaz power plant to grow any more if we can do so with simple things. LED backlit can also last longer, should be about double. they should last from 30k hours to 80k hours. Vs old LCD monitors of about 15k-50k hours.

How To Type Those Special Spanish Characters On Your Keyboard - Did you ever wonder how you can type those special accented Spanish characters on your computer keyboead, even if you have just a standard U.S. keyboard? It's easy to add them to Word documents or Email by using a few simple "Keyboard Shortcuts:"
For PCs: Hold down the ALT key while entering the three digits using your number keys:
é = ALT + 130
á = ALT + 160
í = ALT + 161
ó = ALT + 162
ú = ALT + 163
ñ = ALT + 164
¡ = ALT + 173
¿ = ALT + 168
ü = ALT + 129
For MACs: Press the OPTION key plus the following:
á = OPTION + E, release then type A
é = OPTION + E, release then type E
í = OPTION + E, release then type I
ó = OPTION + E, release then type O
ú = OPTION + E, release then type U
ñ = OPTION + N, release then type N
¡ = SHIFT + OPTION + 1
¿ = SHIFT + OPTION + ?
ü = OPTION + U, release then type U
http://www.vistawide.com/languages/typing_foreign_language_characters.htm

also
lpg
just change your keyboard choice to US International (go to control panel)
and then you simply press the alt key and use the regular letter and the
accented letter will appear.

many people in the LaVentana area were using the hughes one. There are issues with getting onto the proper sat because the one we need to be on is at or near capaicity.

Here is a quote from a todos santos website, I believe he is in the business and can set one up on the correct sat..

VSAT Satellite Internet Systems for Baja Mexico

Hi-speed Internet connectivity is a relatively limited service in most of the lower Baja peninsula. Now there is a high-speed solution no matter where you live. For High speed Internet Access anywhere in Baja, Mexico, we provide and install HughesNet Satellite Internet Systems and VSAT Commercial Satellite Internet Systems, based on the iDirect® 3000 Infinity® satellite router. Now you can be connected to the Internet full time via Satellite Internet no matter where you are.

On Line Storage

see newer post.... microsoft and google have entered the picture

Ever had a hard time sending a large file to a friend? This solves this and more. Free online file storage of files and way to send large files to friends. This allows you to store any information/files/photos online and have access anywhere in the world. I have been using the last two listed for about 3 years. Box.net has been my favorite because it allowed me to give access (upload and download capability) to directories/files to other people at the same time. I have not tried the two new ones with more storage.

10 gig storage for free http://www.humyo.com/pages/en/free-online-file-storage
5 gig storage for free http://www.filedropper.com/
5 gig storage for free http://www.box.net/
2 gig storage for free http://www.yousendit.com/

as of 10/2010 box.net is 5 gig free. Also you can store your traveling documents credit card numbers and phone numbers for credit card compnies. Kee them there in case any are lost or stollen and you then have access wordwide.

a. RE: Outlook Not Sending Mail

The problem with sending mail through your Outlook account is most likely due to one or two things:

1. You have the wrong name entered for the outgoing SMTP server.

2. Your ISP does not use the standard outgoing SMTP mail port 25. This was done to prevent spammers from using your ISP's mail servers to send spam. If so, you will need to change your Outlook account configuration for the affected account.

If it's your Gmail address you're having problems with, then your SMTP server should be set to "smtp.gmail.com" using port 587, and have "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" enabled.

In the Outlook menu, go to Tools > Accounts > View or Change Existing E-mail Accounts > Next > click to select the affected account and click "Change..." Make sure the "Outgoing mail server (SMTP)" is set for: smtp.gmail.com

Click on the "More settings..." button. A new dialog box will appear. Click the "Advanced" tab. Type 587 in the Outgoing server (SMTP): box. Click the "Outgoing Server" tab and tick the box that reads "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication". Click "OK" to close the dialog box.

Click the "Test Account Settings..." button to test.

another one for LaPaz
lpg

Yesterday morning i was ready to pitch my laptop, today it's working perfectly.  So if your computer is acting up you might want to think about getting it looked at, cleaned, reformatted, debugged, etc.  I highly recommend Cesar Jimenez...learned about him from LPG a few years ago.  He's clever, professional and very reasonably priced.  Also, he will come to your home.  Excellent English if it matters. cell 612 108-9826
