Wendy Johnson Miller I think it was Banorte. You need your passport tourist visa and a utility bill.

Here is a low cost way to get money into mexico. as we know Bank of america charges 3% now.   so does zoom.

They charge $5.00 plus 3% for up to $2,900.00 in transfers when using a bank account from the usa.    They tell you the exchange rate before you send the money, for instance today it was 14.77 and market is 15.23 so they are charging 3 percent.   You can pick up the money at several locations or into your bank account,  sorrienas, elektra, Banorte, Bancomer.

Also you can pay your CFE bills and Telmex bills with them online.   these have a 2 business day delay.

They claim 15 minutes is the time for cash pick ups.

apps for google, apple, amazon too.

if you use it with he following link I receive  $25.00 one time gift card so they say...
xoom

The benefit to using this way if no risk to your debit card getting mirrored by thieves.   Which occurs at many locations in Baja.  Or losing it in a machine and dealing with cancelling it.  Or another one that keeps popping up in baja is money is not dispensed though the online bank statement says it was.   That one can be months before you get your money back.

BPE
a. ATM Discussion
1) A friend & I, both with Charles Schwab debit cards, were denied cash at the HSBC next to Wal-Mart in Cabo San Lucas. When I called Schwab, they said they had blocked HSBC due to its high volume of fraud.

2) I had two incidents with ATM's in Cabo. Both were with HSBC using a Scotia Bank debit card. The first was with the machine at the bank in the mall by Walmart. The second was with the ATM for the same bank in the Walmart store.I did not get a receipt for either transaction but as I had tried more than once, in front of witnesses, I did get receipts for the other tries but no money. I am out in total over $1,000.00 Canadian
. I immediately contacted my bank in both cases and they were investigating. I have been told that as it is international I have to wait 47 days for action of any kind. This is very frustrating to say the least.. I will supposedly see some action from the Bank of Nova Scotia around the middle of April. I hope this is true.

3) A different bank machine problem. The bank machine in Los Barriles doesn't like Canadian bank cards. ! You may only withdraw 2000 pesos per transaction, so if you for instance want 6000, you have to withdraw 3 times and pay the bank fee three times both here and at home in Canada. If you try to use the "other" (amount) button you get a strange message : "No small denominations available" (!) So since we live in La Ribera and have to use gas at each trip going for money, it is becoming quite an expensive process. Inge

4) Last year I had a problem in San Jose at the Scotia ATM in the center with Applebee's and Office Max. I inserted my card into the machine and requested a cash amount, nothing happened for more than a minute and I could not get my card back. I didn't want to leave the machine incase it dispensed money and my card. Finally after about 2 minutes my card was ejected but no money. My US bank account was debited the amount requested but they would not process my claim stating a business ATM card did not have the same protection as a personal ATM card. I gave up and was out several hundred dollars.

ATMs are still a good option for getting cash out in Mexico (see details below). Readers should note that there have been sporadic problems with ATMs being modified by thieves installing skimmers, so here’s a link to an article on stopping this kind of information theft at ATMs – see about halfway down: http://yucalandia.com/answers-to-common-questions/banking-currency-exchanges-using-credit-cards-atms-in-mexico/

Wells Fargo’s Express Send service is still wiring money from the USA to Mexico. Account holders can send up to $1,500 U.S. per day to certain Mexican banks for $5 USD. One poster described using BBVA Bancomer here to receive the wire. They said there is no charge for receiving if you have an account which can be opened with a $2,000 pesos min. balance/no fee. This process takes 2 days.

In no particular order: Bancomer is still cashing foreign checks for account holders. Intercam currently accepts personal checks from the USA, but some branches are saying they will stop cashing them in August. Actinver is saying they will no longer deposit checks from the USA. Merrill Lynch transfers money for free, if you have enough on deposit with them. Citibank US accounts can transfer $$ for free to MEXICAN Banamex accounts (– but who knows how long that will last… as Banamex goes through regulatory scrutiny and prosecutions: where the Banamex-USA has closed most accounts of US citizens living in Mexico). We can open an HSBC bank account in the US or Canada, and one in Mexico, and then link the accounts and make free transfers between accounts between countries if we deposit enough. The HSBC transferred money appears instantly. XE.com does exchanges from US accounts and transfers within 4 days, but you have to open the XE account from the USA. Capital One 360 debit card has no fees and allows free withdrawals at Banorte ATMs – up to $3,000 pesos a day. Monex still has its fans where you can wire money from any US bank to Monex, and then withdraw funds from Monex Mexico offices. Also note that the information I listed here has eccentric twists like: one way to get around Capital One 360/Banorte’s $3,000 peso a day withdrawal, MultiVa allows withdrawals up to $10,000 pesos a day for about $2 -$3 in fees. Also note that if you have a MultiVa account, then you can currently deposit US checks here in Mexico with them.

I spoke with Carlos at Bancomer yesterday and he informed me that there are going to be some major changes in the policy concerning check cashing in the near future. He recommended a company that might serve my needs better and cheaper.   The name is Intercam and is located next to the Subway shop on Abosolo.  I spoke with them and they told me that you can write a check on a U.S. account and receive the cash (10 working days to clear) in either pesos or dollars.  The only fee would be $9 regardless of the amount.  There is no fee for the conversion to pesos and it's done at the current exchange rate.  My question is has anyone dealt with this company before?  They have a web page and show offices all over the world with 3 in the San Lucas area.  The office in La Paz is not listed.  I suppose because it is relatively new.  Thanks

I use XOOM.com also but can only move $999.99 per day @ $4.99 per
transaction.  Works perfectly.  My transfers are to Santander so may  $999.99 is the
max they will take.  I also have wired large sums of money  from B of A to
Santander ... $25 charge, takes about 3 days.
lpg

We use xoom and the daily limit is $2,999 (dollars).  Here is an excerpt
from the xoom website:

As soon as you sign up, you can send up to $2,999 USD every 24 hours, up to
$6,000 USD in a 30-day period, and up to $9,999 USD in a 180-day period.
Sending limits are applied to the combined activity of all accounts with
the same physical address. For this reason, Xoom recommends maintaining one
account per household to more easily manage your sending limit.

Every Xoom transaction is capped at $2,999 USD but you can send up to
$25,000 USD in a 30-day period (up to $60,000 USD in 180-days) by supplying
additional information to help us ensure a secure money transfer experience
while meeting Federal and State regulatory requirements. You will be
prompted to provide this information whenever you try to send more than
your current limit or you may save time by making arrangements with our
Customer Verification team to provide this information in advance. Learn
more about sending limits

I usually pick up the money the next day, Mon through Fri, although it can be picked up the same day if the request is made early in the day.  The problem for most of you may be that I did have to set this up with WF when I was in the states.  I don't know if you can get the money in U.S. funds as I only use pesos here.

We do work with INTERCAM and so far has been great and they are
quick and efficient.   We accept USA and Canada checks from our
clients, take them to  Intercam in Abasolo and Intercam transfers
the money same day, in just few hours either in our Peso or
Dollar Accounts.   Talk to Lupita, she may be able to assist you.
Intercam, Abasolo 3615, Local 5 (next to Subway) tel: 612 153

Visited with Carlos today.  Since we are full-time residents in La Paz and have both USD and Peso accounts at Bancomer we will see absolutely no changes in our funds transfer here....deposit check from US bank to dollar account; check clears in 7 days; transfer funds to peso account; no fees; good exchange rate; no problemo; spend pesos.....done deal.

......
Unfortunately AL, Carlos informed me that they will start limiting the
amounts you can deposit per month. I think he said 30% of your monthly
balance. I also am a full time resident and have both personal and business
peso and USD accounts and was very sad to hear that they are doing this. I
also have never received money in under 10 business days from a personal
check written from my USA bank to the Bancomer accounts.

Here is a little update. I just signed up for Capital one 360. They link to
your existing account int he states and you can transfer money to the 360
account for free. They do not charge any fees with international withdraws
or purchases. If you use one of the allpoints atm then you will not even
get a fee from that ATM they will reimburse you the fee. The sign up was
super easy. Will keep you posted as I start to use the new checking account.

Banamex USA is now CitiBank, and has been a sister bank to Banamex Mx for a very long time.  I have no charges at all when I make withdrawals from any Banamex machine here.  It's called an Amistad account, with a minimum age of 55, if you want to check it out.
