Dengue is the fastest spreading tropical disease, with 40% of the world’s population is currently at risk. Transmitted by mosquitoes, so far there’s been little progress in fighting back. One organization is using a naturally occurring bacteria to inoculate mosquitoes and has plans to eradicate the disease. (Source: Bloomberg)

Communities in Mexico adopt the Wolbachia method of the World Mosquito Program
05/08/2019

Recent outbreaks of dengue in various parts of the world and a rapid increase in the number of Zika cases imply a significant burden on communities. Mosquito-borne diseases exert financial pressure on families because sick people can not work, attend school and family members often need to take time to care for their loved ones. The above has been studied at a global level, the investigations concluded that families cover up to 45% of the global cost of dengue, which can triple the monthly cost invested in their home when caring for a member affected by dengue 1 .

In La Paz, BCS, the community has historically suffered several dengue outbreaks. This, together with other factors, was reason for the World Mosquito Program (WMP) to arrive in Mexico for the first time. After extensive community participation and public acceptance activities carried out in 2018, the first phase of mosquito releases with Wolbachia began in the city of La Paz. More than 1,800 members of the community are showing their support for the project by volunteering to host the "Zancu Kit" in their homes.

The WMP Project Manager for Mexico, Frederico Muzzi, thanks the community for the support that allows the development and success of our Wolbachia method in La Paz:

"The great heroes of this project and those who make our work possible are all the citizens of Baja California who have joined the project, either participating in one of our 330 events organized by the community participation team, listening or reading about the Wolbachia method , Showing interest with your questions and comments, or being volunteers. Our great thanks is to all who have had confidence in the project and decided to volunteer by hosting 'Zancu Kits' in the yard, garden or trees of their homes, "said .

The Zancu Kits can be placed in shaded areas in volunteer gardens

The Zancu Kits are cardboard containers that house mosquito eggs, water is added and after 2 or 3 weeks the eggs hatch and the adult mosquitoes fly away. The mosquitoes with Wolbachia breed with the local population of mosquitoes, so over time the percentage of mosquitoes with Wolbachia increases. Mosquitoes with Wolbachia have a reduced capacity to transmit viruses to people, thus decreasing the risk of Zika, dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever outbreaks.

We have had the privilege to count on the participation as volunteers of hundreds of people, among them is Francisca Osuna Mayoral who commented: "There have been many cases of diseases caused by mosquitoes and I do not want any more. Before I was in doubt and my children told me that it was a project that has already worked in other places. That's why we cooperate. "

Francisca Osuna Mayoral chose to host her Zancu Kit after her children heard about the success of the other WMP projects.

Another volunteer is Mario Espinoza who supports the project because: "There will be more mosquitoes friends than enemies. My grandchildren are always in my house, I would not want them to get sick of something like dengue. It's a benefit for the whole family, we'll be more secure. "

WMP is working in partnership with the Ministry of Health of Baja California Sur to implement this project in La Paz. Local and national government authorities have also demonstrated their support and approval of the project because it represents a long-term sustainable alternative to current approaches to vector control.

WMP would like to thank Christy Walton's Candeo Fund for providing financial support for the first phase of the project in Mexico, through the International Community Foundation (ICF).

With the support of citizens and health authorities, WMP's goal is to provide communities with durable protection against Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya viruses.

some good news. Seems LaPaz is going to be a test for the Wolbachia infected Aedes Aegypti mosquito. Thus we should not see any dengue zika and so on outbreaks. The good news is this does work. And the bad news is though they are making the claim it is long term it has not shown that to be true. Not any of the tests they have made have proven that, in fact it appears for long term as I predicted it would fail. But it does make a huge dent in the short term.
