La Paz, Baja California Sur.- During 2023, dengue cases in Baja California Sur increased by more than 650% compared to the previous year.

According to the latest data provided by the country's General Directorate of Epidemiology, during 2023, 717 confirmed cases were registered in the entity. This number represents a marked increase compared to the previous year, when 91 confirmed cases were reported in the same period.

Of these 717 cases, 499 have been identified as non-severe Dengue, 173 with warning signs and 45 classified as serious cases and unlike the previous year, in 2023 one death was recorded.

Faced with the significant increase in confirmed cases, the state Secretary of Health, Zazil Flores Aldape, reported that prevention measures have been reinforced by carrying out fumigations. However, he stressed the importance of raising awareness among citizens, urging them to avoid the proliferation of mosquito breeding sites in their homes.

To do this, he recommended avoiding the accumulation of water in patios, eliminating weeds from the gardens and, if there is stored water, keeping it covered. Likewise, he highlighted the importance of keeping storage containers and drains clean, since these places encourage the reproduction of the dengue-transmitting mosquito.

In addition, the health minister called on the population to contribute to cleaning yards and go to consultations in the presence of symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, muscle or joint pain, eye pain, headache or fever.

In relation to respiratory diseases that affected the region, a total of 733 suspected cases of influenza were reported. Of this set, 33 cases have been confirmed as positive. Unfortunately, the death of one person as a result of this disease was reported. In comparison, during the year 2022, 2,958 suspected cases of influenza were registered, of which 81 were positive.

Regarding COVID-19 cases, 6,904 suspected cases were reported, of which 348 were confirmed as positive. 27 deaths related to this disease have been recorded.

Considering the winter season, health authorities have emphasized to the population, especially parents, urging them to take advantage of the availability of vaccines to protect the vulnerable community. Zazil Flores Aldape reiterated that vaccines are essential for specific groups, such as people aged 60 and over, children over six months and under five years, health personnel, pregnant women and those with comorbidities such as immunosuppression, kidney failure, diabetes and cancer. .

For this reason, he called for them to go to their health unit and complete the different vaccination schedules, as well as go to the medical units if they experience any symptoms. Likewise, he highlighted the importance of maintaining basic hygiene measures, such as regular hand washing, the use of face masks when showing respiratory symptoms, and the proper use of masks for older adults in crowded places.

He explained that in this campaign the state government invests 35 million pesos, applied in fumigations, fuels and payment of personnel, in an era where historically there are rains and floods that become reservoirs for the transmitting mosquito.
